A couple of dishes cooked recently. One is pork loin stewed in tomato sauce. Tomato was not fresh unsuitable for salad. Still tasted good.
The other is pork miso soup. Radish, carrot and taro were the products of our garden farm.
Both were pretty successful.
Inflation is quite remarkable here especially for food. I am going to grow more veggies this spring. I have purchased seed potatoes which are much more expensive than last year. Possibly one potato costs about a dollar or so.
Not only for frugality but also for pleasure to do with living things, I would go on farming.
I am your age and I like to grow things but unfortunately I do not have much luck growing vegetables in the garden. Here in my suburban garden they must be sprayed with pest repellants very often. Instead I grow flowers and shrubs that attract bees. The are becoming endangered and I want to help them.
ReplyDeleteI really like your mentions of Japanese food. I have always loved sushi and have recently tried Miso. It is excellent but not 100% perfect when made from ingredients in an American Supermarket. I will need to go to a local Asian market.
I love cabbage and onions and I want make Okonomiyaki. Japanese cooking is so healthy compared to American cooking.
I love your blog - please keep adding to it.
Thanks for a very pleasant and meaningful comment. I am glad you like japanese style food. I wish you very good luck. One benefit of japanese food is low content of fat. I could say only little about food science. Go on searching about it in your farming/cooking. Keeping bees is good tactics. Any pesticides are not beneficial in long vision. They would kill insects and bacteria necessary for growth of plants. One point I could advise you is not to fertilize your vegetables too much. You may already know of it. It will make the plants more vulnerable to diseases and/or insect damages. Suitable amount of organic compost may be good enough. Anyway, let's keep up farming and enjoy it!
DeleteWhen too much damage from insects occurs, I would use insect net. Only infrequently. Only young plants are vulnerable to insects. Sometimes grow seedlings on pots as well. You may know these things well!
