Ensemble is living together.

Ensemble is a communication sharing our lives. We breathe together when we play an ensemble. Needless to say about wind instrument, even string ensemble requires us to synchronize breathing in the beginning. It is one of the communications based on our life.

Music itself is something difficult to be defined. It won't stay anywhere for a long time. It passes away somewhere as soon as it is played. It covers our entire being for a moment. It enters deeply in our emotion and mind. It is a world present apriori. It is closely related with, or rather, expresses the universe as a cosmos. In ensemble, we confirm and please ouselves to be living in the cosmos together. Playing ensemble, we live the eternity through the moment.

Nevertheless,  ensemble won't exist as an ideal thing from time to time. Last night, after we finish our dinner with our daughter coming home, I could hear some note from my wife's room. A violin and a flute. Daughter accompanied my wife playing flute with her violin. Our daughter used to practise violin for years in her childhood but quit it at age 15 years. She seldom opens the violin case any longer. I don't know why but she has taken the violin and started playing it for a while.

I and my wife wanted to play an ensemble at home some day. It has not come true. But in some years, maybe, we could play some simple trio sonata or something. Hopefully, our daughter would enjoy her violin when she finds sometime free in the future.

Music far away from its ideal form would go on sounding at my home until that time.

What a mess in this room!

  1. Really like this and "the scene." Sent the link to my daughter, who is learning the violin at age "fifty-ish." Jim

    1. JIm,

I hope your daughter Juliet would enjoy this photo. She seems much talented in music, so that she must make rapid progress with violin.

  2. There is no mess in that room. That is a wonderful photograph of life. A mother and daughter enjoying each other's company. A missing element..a Cello and a father.

    1. Don,

I would join them very soon. Only problem is that our daughter seldom takes this violin. She might remember of music in her later life. Hopefully, she will remember of us at the same time.

  3. My son wad forced to learn piano by his mother. After the final exam he abandoned the instrument and took up guitar. Maybe it was a reaction against his authoritarian mother. And maybe (hopefully) he will return to the piano one day, as your daughter returned to the violin. That room is very tidy!

    1. John,

I am sure he will do. As they say, what is learned in the cradle is carried to the tomb. Srely, he will thank both of you to let or make him learn piano in his young days. I could not help to read your expression of authoritarian for your wife. I suspect so is she not only for you son but for you.

  4. I truly envy you for having such a musically oriented family and friends. Many years ago probably 45 or more, we purchased a nice piano, and my oldest daughter took some lessons, my son played a trumpet in the school band, and my younger daughter played the flute, and I played with ham radio now and then. None of my kids continued to play any instruments after getting out of school, but during those years in school we would hear music of a single instrument at a time. I grew somewhat interested in the classic orchestra, and we attended a few concerts now and then.
As our kids completed school, music went by the wayside! Both Lolita and I always loved the early Rock & Roll music of the 50's and 60's, and we both enjoyed the old Country music also. I never really spent any money on fancy sounds systems, but helped many people purchase only the best for their investment, and I put together some kit form audio equipment both reproduction and recording equipment. We listened to the radio in our car which always had a good system, but recently we found that just listening to the radio was practically non-stop commercials, so we used a CD or tape player in the car so we could continue to hear our music. A few years ago Loita's oldest brother passed away, and we were given some excellent audio equipment, including JBL speakers, and a great Kenwood Receiver which is now about 20 years old. We listen to the radio or CD's often, especially around Christmas time!
But two years ago we purchased a near new car with satellite radio in addition to AM/FM and CD's. We were given a 3 month subscription to the Satellite radio and things began to change. No commercials, must music and a very large selection of types of music. So now we listen to old Rock & Roll, Old Country music, and some of what is called Bluegrass which is more like country music of the past. I find we are hearing more music now than we did for many of our 50 years of married life, plus I have the distinct pleasure of listening to my favorite music called CW! CW has rhythm when properly sent, and you can tell the difference between machine sent CW compared with the sending of a man with no assists from a machine other than a mechanical device such as a bug or standard straight key! I know you have similar feelings, as do many other older hams that I know. While this music does not have a large variety of musical notes, it's rhythm and timing make for a relaxing slow speed conversation with other people, that only a few people can use for conversation any more! Funny how the topic of music everyone can enjoy, has a distinct relationship with our favorite man made sounds of CW!

PS: I tried to learn the guitar, but gave up because it was taking too long to learn!

    1. Bob,

Music has the same root whatever genre it might be. But Rock and Roll is a little bit different to me hi. It is good both of you enjoy music more lately. I know of the satellite radio. When I visited an old friend of mine, Bob, W6CYX, he let me listen to such a radio specialized for classical music, possibly, only for Bach on the way back from Santa Cruz to San Jose on his car. No commercials. Very excellent. I know what radio you are enjoying there.

I hope your children would listen music or play instruments in the future. At certain age, we feel more inclined to do with music, which reminds us of old times.

CW is sure a kind of music. Very primitive. The rhythm is surely musical. However, if I am asked which I would choose instrument or paddle, I would answer I would do with the former. Your bug has been a music to me since I first hear you as NF7H.

  5. Bob, you will never believe this, but Shin has been encouraging me to take banjo lessons. He believes that I can play banjo with his cello on an arrangement of Bach. The truth be told, Shin is really practicing to play Jimi Hendrix on his Cello. He heard that it was very popular in the US and he wants to bring Jimi Hendrix to Japan on Cello.

    1. Aha,

      Don,

This comment is all what you have thought in your mind! Not mine! haha

I have never listened to Hendrix. Is it a kind of chicken?

You may start Banjo very soon. I am looking forward to listening to you playing it.
